Fan-Fold Radiant Barrier Do it Yourself “DIY” installation instructions.
There are two installation options
Option one:
Tools needed [safety glasses, scissors or utility knife and reflective tape (if needed)]
Ceiling Joist (Over Insulation) Recommended

Start at back of attic and work toward attic door.

Lay Fan-fold directly over the top of the ceiling joists, insulation and A/C ducting

Cut openings in the product above any heat generating devices (ex: light mounted in ceiling). i.e. can lighting

Lay seems side by side.

Drape over any ducts close to the attic floor.

Cut around trusses and bracing work as necessary and use reflective tape as needed.

For sloped areas use staple gun or reflective tape to fasten to joist.

DO NOT cover Furnace, Gas Water Heater or any heat generating Mechanical Devices.
Option two:
Tools needed [safety glasses, staple gun, scissors or utility knife]
Underside of Rafter
- Make any needed repairs to attic area before installing Fan-fold.

Unfold the Fan-fold product and cut to suitable lengths as needed.

Install the product perpendicular to the rafters with a 1” to 2” overlap on the seams (no taping required). Staple the product to the rafters at 6” to 8” intervals.

Allow for proper ventilation. Be sure not to block ventilation paths when you install Fan-fold.

Try and leave a 2” to 3” gap on each side of the roof peak and a gap at the lower edge of the roof line, within 18” is ok.

Staple to the face of the studs on gables and insure at least a 1” gap around all vents.
*** This method of installation for any radiant barrier is not recommended
where the attic ceiling height is eight feet or taller.
