option-1.jpgTools needed [safety glasses, scissors or utility knife and reflective tape (if needed)]

Ceiling Joist (Over Insulation) Recommended
  • Start at back of attic and work toward attic door.
  • Lay Fan-fold directly over the top of the ceiling joists, insulation and A/C ducting
  • Cut openings in the product above any heat generating devices (ex: light mounted in ceiling). i.e. can lighting
  • Lay seems side by side.
  • Drape over any ducts close to the attic floor.
  • Cut around trusses and bracing work as necessary and use reflective tape as needed.
  • For sloped areas use staple gun or reflective tape to fasten to joist.
  • DO NOT cover Furnace, Gas Water Heater or any heat generating Mechanical Devices.

Option two:

Tools needed [safety glasses, staple gun, scissors or utility knife]

Underside of Rafter

  • Make any needed repairs to attic area before installing Fan-fold.
  • Unfold the Fan-fold product and cut to suitable lengths as needed.
  • Install the product perpendicular to the rafters with a 1” to 2” overlap on the seams (no taping required). Staple the product to the rafters at 6” to 8” intervals.
  • Allow for proper ventilation. Be sure not to block ventilation paths when you install Fan-fold.
  • Try and leave a 2” to 3” gap on each side of the roof peak and a gap at the lower edge of the roof line, within 18” is ok.
  • Staple to the face of the studs on gables and insure at least a 1” gap around all vents.

*** This method of installation for any radiant barrier is not recommended
where the attic ceiling height is eight feet or taller.
